Retail worker Ash Maharjan’s trip to work is typically a 40-minute train trip from Kogarah in Sydney’s south to Edgecliff in the eastern suburbs.

Not today. Maharjan, 26, said she was “stressed” and had no idea how long she would have to wait to get to her full-time job in Double Bay.

“We don’t know what’s happening, there are no trains. They said the information boards are wrong and we checked the apps as well.

“We just have to see, I’m just very confused. We’re waiting for someone to tell us.”

Maharjan said her only other option was a 45-minute Uber trip, but that would be prohibitively expensive.

“I’ve texted my manager and she was really understanding, but obviously she does expect me to come to work.”

Train announcers at Kogarah station were warning commuters of cancellations at short notice due to the industrial action about 8.30am. One said over the loudspeaker that he couldn’t tell from his information boards when trains would be arriving.

“Our information is very staggered. We’re hopeful of a service to Bondi Junction in five to 10 minutes, but I’ll keep you updated.”
