More sandbag locations have opened today to help Brisbane people prepare for flooding.

Council staff and traffic controllers will be on site at the four extra locations at Acacia Ridge, Toowong, Camp Hill and Boondall, in addition to the normal 24/7 depots.

Residents are being asked to bring their own shovel and cable ties, and can bring their own bags if they have them.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said feedback from queuing residents indicated many people were “eager to fill their own sandbags to help council crews.

“While sandbags will not stop flood water entirely they can reduce the amount of water entering a home or business,” he said.

“It’s important residents take this threat of Cyclone Alfred seriously and get prepared, but I remind residents to be patient and to not take more sandbags than they need.”

On Monday, sandbags were temporarily unavailable at council depots due to “unprecedented demand”.

About 100,000 sandbags were collected in the past three days, including 74,000 on Monday – the highest daily demand in council history.

It exceeds the daily supply of sandbags during the 2022 flood, which saw a peak of 37,000 sandbags handed out in one day.

Residents are asked to check council’s website before attending as due to overwhelming demand, sandbags may be temporarily unavailable at some locations.
